A clogged drain is a plumbing problem you can see and smell. Water sits in the sink. The tub gurgles. A floor drain in the basement starts to rise. Messageplaying Plumbing is a referral service. We connect homeowners in Rockwood and the Rockwood area with independent providers who clear drains for a living.
The provider does the work, not Messageplaying Plumbing. Many providers can respond quickly, but availability varies, so ask when you reach one. This page walks you through the first few minutes, explains how drains get cleared, and lists the questions to ask before you say yes. Read it with the water off. Then pick up the phone or request an estimate.
Drain Backing Up? Start Here
Stop running water. That is step one. Every gallon you send down a blocked drain has to go somewhere. Usually it comes back up.
Breathe. Most clogs are fixable, and most are not dangerous. You have a minute to think.
Your First Ten Minutes
- Stop using sinks, tubs, showers, the dishwasher and the washer.
- Do not flush the toilet.
- Move rugs, boxes and anything valuable away from the drain.
- Try a plain plunger on one fixture. Two or three tries is enough.
If the plunger works, you are done. If it does not, stop. Pushing harder can drive the clog deeper.
Water off first. Then call.
One Drain or the Whole House?
This is the key question. The answer tells you how big the problem is.
Only One Fixture Is Slow
The clog is close to that fixture. Think hair in a tub, grease in a kitchen sink, or a wad of paper in a toilet. This is the easy case. A provider can usually clear it with a hand tool.
Several Fixtures Act Up Together
The clog is farther down, in the main drain. Run the washer and see if the tub gurgles. Flush a toilet and watch the shower. If more than one drain reacts, the blockage is shared.
Sewage in a basement floor drain is more serious. Keep kids and pets away. Do not wade in. Request a callback to check provider availability, and say sewage is involved.
When It Is an Emergency
Some clogs cannot wait. Treat it as urgent if:
- Water or sewage is coming up into the house.
- Every drain is blocked at once.
- The smell is strong and sour.
- A heavy storm or spring melt just hit, and the basement drain is rising.
In those cases, ask about emergency drain clearing when you reach a provider. Some will come out fast. Some will not. Ask plainly.
Common Causes of Clogged Drains
Know the cause and you can stop a repeat.
- Kitchen: grease, coffee grounds, food scraps.
- Bathroom: hair, soap film, toothpaste, dental floss.
- Toilets: too much paper, wipes, and anything labeled "flushable."
- Laundry: lint and detergent build-up.
- Main drain: tree roots, a cracked or sagging pipe, years of build-up in older frame homes.
A clog that keeps coming back in the same spot often points to the pipe itself. That is a different job, and a provider can tell you.
How Providers Clear Drains
The tool depends on the clog. Here are the usual three.
Snaking
A coiled steel cable goes into the pipe. It breaks up the clog or hooks it and pulls it out. This fits most sink, tub and toilet clogs.
Hydro Jetting
High-pressure water scrubs the inside of the pipe. It cuts through grease and heavy build-up. It suits stubborn main lines. It is not right for every pipe, so ask first.
Camera Inspection
A small camera runs through the line. You see the clog, a crack or a root. This is how a provider confirms the problem is gone, or finds what is really wrong.
Why You Should Skip Chemical Drain Cleaners
Short answer: they often make things worse.
The liquid sits on a full clog and cannot reach it. It can eat at old pipes. It can burn skin and eyes. And if it fails, the provider now has to work around harsh chemicals in standing water.
If you already poured some in, tell the provider. They will wear the right gear.
Keeping Drains Clear
Small habits help a lot.
- Wipe grease into the trash, not the sink.
- Put a catch screen in the tub and shower.
- Flush only toilet paper and waste.
- Run hot water for a bit after washing dishes.
- Keep the basement floor drain clear of dust and debris.
In homes with sump pumps, check that the pump and floor drain both work before spring melt and storm season.
Ask Before You Hire
A good provider expects questions. Ask these.
- Can you give a written quote before starting?
- What tool will you use, and why?
- Do you charge extra for evenings or weekends?
- Will you run a camera to check your work?
- What happens if the clog returns?
What a Good Answer Sounds Like
Clear and specific. "I'll snake the line, then camera it. The price is this, in writing." No fog. No pressure.
Red Flags
- A price that jumps once they arrive.
- Pushing a full pipe replacement before looking inside.
- No written estimate.
- Refusing to say what the work includes.
Calm first, then call.
What's Included
Sink, Tub and Toilet Clogs
Providers clear blocked fixtures with hand tools, so water drains again without damage to your pipes.
Main Line Clearing
When several drains back up together, a provider can clear the shared line with a cable or jetter.
Floor Drains
Basement and laundry floor drains get cleared so water and sewage stop rising after storms.
Camera Checks
A small camera shows what caused the clog, so you know if the pipe needs more work.

No obligationHome Drain Cleaning FAQ
Why is my drain backing up when I use another sink or the washer?
That usually means the clog is in the main drain, not at one fixture. Water from other lines has nowhere to go and pushes up the weakest opening. Stop using water and have a provider check the main line.
Can I use drain cleaner before calling a plumber?
It is better not to. Chemical cleaners often fail on a full clog and can harm older pipes. They also make the job riskier for the provider. Try a plunger once, then stop and call.
How do I know if a clog is an emergency?
Treat it as urgent if sewage is coming up, every drain is blocked at once, or water is rising in the basement. A single slow sink is less urgent, but still stop using it and get it looked at.
